E-bikes sales in Spain hit record numbers in 2020

E-bike and bicycle sales in Spain hiked to more than 1.5 million units in 2020, a record. According to the latest statistics published by the Spanish Bicycle Industry Association AMBE, the total market volume increased by 24.1% compared with 2019. Although the MTB is still the most important category in Spain, the largest growth came from the e-bike with sales growing 48.9% to a total of 212,635 units. Sales of road bikes grew 46.4% to 105,776 units. At 212,635 units the e-bike is not yet the largest category in volume, but it is the most important one in terms of turnover. At an average price of €2,648 the e-bike holds a market share of 42% representing a total market value of over €563 million. The e-bike also lifted the average retail price by 21.7% to €865.

 Doubling of market value The 2020 total market volume of e-bike and bicycles combined stands at 1.56 million units, an increase of 24.1% compared with 2019. Also, in turnover the market recorded a major 39.4% growth from €1.87 billion in 2019 to €2.61 billion last year. In seven years’ time the market value in Spain almost doubled from €1.35 billion in 2014 to €2.61 billion in 2020. 

“What we see happening in Spain is in line with the rest of the European markets: a huge increase in e-bikes sales and a very special and significant sign that urban cycling is kicking-off. We have been waiting for a long time to see this happen,” said AMBE’s President Javier López. The popularity of cycling also lifted the sales of components by 21.7% and cycling gear by 13%. The number of bike shops also increased last year.

Retail market shares  

In 2020, IBDs accounted for 83% of the total turnover of the bicycle sector, gaining a 2.89% market share compared to multi-sport chains and department stores. The multi-sport chains accounted for 10.94% of the total turnover, having lost just under 1% market share.
