And this takes place on a massive scale. But what’s the overall picture; where does this all lead to production-wise. The European Bicycle Manufacturers Association (EBMA) offered that overview at the occasion of the imposition of anti-dumping measures on the import of e-bikes from China.

“Re-shoring of e-bike (Electric Power Assisted Cycles, EPAC) production will immediately create up to 4,600 new jobs. That’s the short-term effect of the anti-dumping measures.” This is claimed by EBMA.

Importers are switching to OEM assemblers in Europe for sourcing their e-bikes.

The consequences of the anti-dumping measures bring a huge drop in e-bike import from China. Bicycle producers all over the EU are benefiting from the dropped imports as importers are switching to OEM assemblers in Europe for sourcing their e-bikes. “Thanks to the re-establishment of the level playing field on the EU market, smaller EU bicycles producers and OEM assemblers have also been able to make the investments needed to start EPAC production. Most of EU e-bikes importers which previously sourced from China, have entered into new business relationships with (OEM) assemblers in the EU. The additional e-bikes that are produced in the EU thanks to the anti-dumping measures are estimated to be more than 900,000 in 2019, and EU Manufacturing SMEs most of the EU Member States are benefitting from the re-shoring.”

EBMA’s Secreatary General Moreno Fioravanti claims also “The re-shoring of EPAC assembly will furthermore have created up to 4,600 new direct jobs in the first half of 2019. Up- and downstream industries also showed job increases as a result of the re-shoring process. The large number of EU bicycle producers will ensure a competitive and innovative environment, offering the EU consumers a large and diversified portfolio of attractive EPACs in all price ranges.”
