That Taiwan’s bicycle industry stands at the start of a whole new era is emphasized by the fact that the country’s e-bike export is breaking record on record. It skyrocketed in the first nine months of this year by over 130 percent! Export totaled 452,000 e-bikes which volume-wise accounted for a 131.4 percent rise. Value-wise this export stood at USD 591 million; up by a big 120 percent over the same period of last year. The average value of an exported Taiwan made e-bike was close to USD 1,310.
According to Taiwan’s Customs Administration the country’s overall export of bicycles, e-bikes as well as P&A combined reached a value of USD 2.6 billion, an increase of 11.1 percent in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2018. The export volume of regular bicycles reached 1.638 million units, slightly down by 1.1 percent compared with last year. The export value of bicycles reached USD 1.009 billion while the average unit price stood at USD 615.99. Taiwas’s top five exporting countries were the Netherlands, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. The Netherlands replaced the United States as the largest importer of electric bicycles from Taiwan. The export value to the Netherlands increase to USD 218 million and 161,000 units.
In-line with the ‘electrification’ of the country’s bicycle industry, the Taipei Cycle Show 2020 will also see a major increase in the number exhibitors of e-bikes and e-bike components. Show organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) forecasts that in 2020 the number of exhibitors in this product category doubles to over 200 compared with the 2019 edition of the event. Overall TAITRA reports an increase in the number of booths by 17 percent to 3,800 for the next Taipei Cycle Show. Taipei Cycle 2020 will be held at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Hall 1 and 2, from March 4th to 7th.
